The importance of Organic Food
Regardless of the diet you follow, choosing organic food is more often the wise choice. Organic food has become very popular and its consumption across a range of households is on the rise. This rise is due to the growing positive effects on personal health as well as improving the health of the planet. By understanding the importance of organic food and opting to consume its vast range of food groups you are deliberately choosing a healthier dietary intake, whilst preserving the ongoing benefits to future generations.
What is meant by organic food?
The term ‘organic’ in general refers to the way agricultural products are grown and processed for consumption. The regulations vary from country to country but the underpinning aim is to grow crops to be classified as organic without the use of synthetic pesticides, bioengineered genes (GMOs), petroleum-based fertilizers, and sewage sludge-based fertilizers.
This includes organic livestock raised for meat, eggs, and dairy products must also have access to open non-restrictive spaces outdoors and be given organic feed. When treating livestock they must not be given antibiotics, growth hormones, or any animal by-products to improve or speed up its development for consumption. When choosing to buy organically grown food you are choosing a diet that is free from harmful chemicals, full of natural nutrients, bursting with taste and sustainable nourishment
Should you buy organic over conventional produce, we at Fresh Start boot camp certainly think so. Organic farming produce is almost always better than conventionally farmed foods, using pesticides, herbicides and fertilisers. Organic Federation of Australia suggest that there is some very good research that show on balance organic food has higher levels of nutrition. Here at the boot camp this is exactly what we are looking for when promoting health and wellbeing as a way of life. The Organic Federation of Australia also state the main reason people buy organic food is for health purposes due to a growing concern regarding the use of pesticides.
In the absence of pesticides and fertilizers, plants boost their production of vitamins and minerals which strengthen their resistance to bugs and weeds. This leads to organically farmed crops producing food that has a higher nutritional value than conventional produce. Furthermore organic foods often have higher counts of antioxidants than conventional food serving well for people with allergies to foods, chemicals, or preservatives.
Organic food is often fresher because it doesn’t contain supermarket expected preservatives that make it last longer. Supermarkets are constantly looking for food types to last longer, organically farm produce is grown without such preservatives allowing it to stay in its natural state and remain as fresh as possible. Organic produce can also be produced on smaller farms near where it is sold, which is great for your local economy and environment. Organic farming is better for the environment due to its practices on reducing pollution, conserving water, increasing soil fertility and using less energy. Furthermore farming without the use of pesticides is also very much more beneficial for birds, animals as well as us humans who live close to farms. You certainly do get a fresh start with organic foods as the food is harvested when ripe and allowing it to be fresher, full of flavour and nutrients.
Small local farmers often use organic methods but sometimes cannot afford to become certified organic producers of food. Therefore changing to an organically rich diet from local producers helps keep money within the local economy, this money of course goes directly to the farmer encouraging more to become certified. With this is mind it is worth noting that where your food says organic, this means it is certified organic food. However, whenever your produce says ‘local food’ bear in mind that there is no specific definition for ‘local’ food in supermarkets. Always check that your organic food produce is certified as organic, this way you know that you are supporting the organic economy as well as choosing the healthier option.
