For some of us, starting a new exercise regime can be a daunting task. It can be confusing trying to figure out how to make the most of your workout, so in this three part series, we’ll be taking a look at ‘the when’, ‘the where’, and ‘the how’ when it comes to getting the best out of exercise regimes. In this first part of our series, we’ll be asking the question when is the optimum time to be exercising…
Studies have shown that those who exercise in the morning tend to remain more consistent and are more likely to continue their regime than those who work out in the p.m. If you struggle to maintain a regular exercise regime, it may be a good idea to try out morning exercise in order to build it into your daily routine.
Afternoon workouts have a range of benefits as people tend to be more alert and awake during this time, leading to a more efficient and injury free regime. It is thought that it is best to exercise when the body temperature is at its highest, which tends to be around 4 p.m. to 5 p.m. One of the reasons for this is that your muscles are at their most flexible, which means that they are stronger and less vulnerable to injury.
Studies have also shown that late evening exercise can improve sleep, which can only be a good thing! Sleep deprivation has been shown to hinder sports performance, so anything that improves quality of sleep is definitely a great thing!
The jury seems to be out on what time is the best for exercising, but we can say with some certainty that, whatever time of day you choose, you will be making a great decision to benefit and improve your health and wellbeing.
