What Is Krill Oil and How Is it Beneficial to Health?
Before we get to the benefits of krill oil, we want to educate our readers over why we need good fats in the first place. Heart Disease (including heart disease, stroke, and cardiovascular disease) is the leading cause of death in the US, killing more than 600,000 people annually. High LDL cholesterol, high blood pressure, and smoking are the key risk factors for heart disease. About 49% of Americans have at least one of these three risk factors (1).
Eliminating these three risks factors and improving cardiac health is easier said than done. Smoking is self-explanatory, although difficult for many, simply give it up and stop. High blood pressure is often controlled by changes in diet and exercise. For others, medications are often prescribed to keep blood pressure at a healthy level. But what about the millions who have high levels of LDL cholesterol (bad) and low levels of HDL cholesterol (good)? What can you do to improve those values and lower your risk of heart disease?

One of the most widely used sources of krill oil is a krill oil supplement. Krill oil’s composition is different than that of fish oil . The omega-3 fatty acids contained in krill oil attach to phospholipids instead of triglycerides, making it easier to absorb. This means that it takes lower doses of krill oil to get the same results derived from higher doses of the standard fish oil currently on the market.

Krill oil’s omega-3 lowers LDL cholesterol levels, which reduces triglyceride levels while increasing HDL cholesterol levels. Krill oil’s higher potency allows it to decrease triglyceride levels quicker than fish oil supplements. As mentioned earlier, this omega-3 also has an anticoagulant effect which prevents the formation of blood clots that cause heart attacks and strokes.
Many fish oil supplements contain mercury. Krill oil doesn’t. What makes krill oil different? Krill feed only on phytoplankton, which does not contain mercury. Krill’s source of omega-3 is considered to be the purest form found on our planet. Keep in mind that most fish are severely contaminated with mercury, which is why it is advised to only eat wild-caught Alaskan salmon.

Omega-3 fatty acids are known to improve the cell’s response to neurotransmitters, insulin, as well as other messengers. They also help repair damaged cells. It is necessary to consume omega-3 fats while lowering your omega-6 fatty acid intake, to create an optimum omega-3 to omega-6 balance .
