10 benefits of drinking green tea

bebenefits of drinking green teaEnjoying a cup of tea is often thought of as a relaxing activity in the evenings or a replacement for coffee to start the day, but did you know, that cup of tea is actually good for you?
Although all types of tea have some benefit, one in particular stands out—green tea!

1. Green Tea Boosts Metabolism
Drinking three or more cups of green tea per day has been shown to significantly boost the metabolism. Individuals who consume this type of tea on a regular basis tend to lose more weight when combined with a healthy lifestyle than people who do not drink green tea but make the same lifestyle changes.

2. Improved Cognitive Function
Drinking just two cups of green tea per day has been linked to staying sharp as people age. In several studies, individuals who consumed at least two cups of green tea per day regularly outperformed other study participants in memory tests and showed fewer signs of cognitive impairment over time. If you struggle to drink tea every day, you can still preserve your brain by consuming it at least four times a week or more.

Tea contains special components called poly-phenol compounds, the antioxidants referred to as catechins specifically, which having increasing evidence to slow or prevent the growth of cancer cells. The poly phenols in tea actually seek out free radicals and help protect DNA structure. They are also believed to help increase enzymes in the body that help fight the development of cancerous compounds like tumours. A study released in 2014 stated that drinking green tea on a regular basis can help reduce the risks of developing cancer of the mouth.

4. Improve Dental Health
Much like the cancer risk benefits, green tea has been connected with better overall dental health because of its antioxidant and cleansing properties. The catechins found in green tea help strengthen teeth by reducing the amount of harmful bacteria (which can cause things like bad breath and gingivitis) found in the mouth. Use caution if you sweeten your tea though! Sugar and other sweeteners can quickly destroy your teeth if you aren’t careful!

5. Reduce the Risk of Type II Diabetes
Another strong benefit of drinking green tea is reducing the risk of developing type II diabetes. It has the ability to reduce blood pressure and has a positive influence on blood insulin. People with type II diabetes have problems metabolising sugar, which the poly phenols in the tea dramatically helps with. In order to get this benefit, you should drink 3 cups of green tea daily.

6. Reduce the Risk of Cardiovascular Disease
Coinciding with the reduced risk of diabetes is the reduced risk of cardiovascular disease as one of the many benefits green tea offers. When green tea is consumed on a regular basis, it helps strengthen the blood vessels leading to the heart. The improvements happen quickly once the tea becomes part of a daily routine and is maintained with continued consumption. In fact, blood flow has been shown to improve in as little as 30 minutes after consuming green tea, in large part due to the caffeine content and the high concentration of flavonoids in the tea.
7. Prevent the Signs of Ageing
The most noticeable signs of ageing are caused by free radicals and the beak down of collagen. However, greentea contains concentrated levels of oligomeric proanthocyanidins—a type of very powerful antioxidant that helps expel free radicals and reduces the breakdown of collagen, promoting a healthy, youthful appearance.

 

8. Increase Longevity
In countries around the world that consume green tea on a regular basis, overall health and longevity are better than non-tea drinking countries. This is thought to be connected to the antioxidants, improved immune function, blood pressure reduction, and stress reduction typically associated with regularly consuming green tea.

9. Improve Athletic Performance
Because green tea contains caffeine, a stimulant that increases blood flow, it has a direct impact on physical performance for fitness and sports. Increasing blood flow allows quicker muscle responses and improved cognitive function—you can be quick on your feet while thinking faster—all because you had a nice cup of tea!
